How often are you touched when walking through the streets?

The brief of this project was to capture/record an experience and replay it. My project focused on the sensorial experience of being touched. Each day we are touched several times: by different people, gestures and each time it has a different effect on us. It is the most fundamental, immediate, intimate, and erotic of all our senses. It connects us to our environment, to others and to objects. The sense of touch allows us to communicate our emotions with others, lets them participate in our lives. Depending on the emotions we often implicitly use different touch characteristics: a short/long touch, contacting/patting, and/or touching by fingers/hand. We can therefore predict the meaning the touch has.

How do you make a sensation that arises through touch visible and experience it in a new way for others?

Through different self-experiments and field research I tried to cluster specific touch gestures and their emotional impact.

How can touch be clustered?

The experience machine records the touch it is given and replay it in a movement. Sensorial information like sound, color was also tested and could be added.

The interaction that can arise in this way is different from a direct contact between two people, because it adds another level of experience. The goal of this transformation is also to make the variety of touches visible/perceptible. The process is comparable to a telephone conversation by means of touch. Sender and receiver interact in this way and can exchange information.
